Start covering small and micro business issues.  Take on small business correspondents to reflect the reality that the majority of business in the UK are small and micro.  Show this great, important group some love!

Why is this important?

It’s time to value our micro businesses and home businesses and show them some love!

Every day it’s the same. “And now for the business news.” Except it’s not the business news, it’s about big banks, the FTSE and big corporations and it fails to reflect the reality in our country.

I run a micro business, but for the big media companies I don’t exist. Unless you are big and global for BBC, Sky, ITV, Channel 4 you are not beautiful.

It makes no sense to ignore this vast audience and market.

Just look at these statistics.

  • “1 in 7 people now work for themselves.”
  • “By 2020 more people will work in micro businesses than the public sector.”
  • Microbusinesses (those that employ less than 10 people) represent a significant proportion of the economy: 95.6% of all UK busent and just below one fifth of turnover.

Micro businesses are growing fast in the UK – by 55 per cent between 2000 and 2013 at the same time there’s been and a five per cent decline in the number of large enterprises with 250 or more employees (Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, 2014).

So where is the coverage? Nowhere!

Who talks about people working from home ? No one!

iain-photo-valuing-small-microbusinessesSo come on BBC SKY ITV and Channel 4 wake up and smell the home brewed coffee.  There’s a vast audience out there wanting something other than men in suits talking about more men in suits.

Start by creating a Small Business Editor and get some decent programming that shows our home based and micro businesses some love.

How it will be delivered

We will stage a Press Conference and invite the Heads of News along to take the petition.
